In 2019 Boyd Cohen, Ph.D., and CEO of IoMob published a very interesting article referencing the three generations of smart cities developing in the world as three mobility paradigm predictions for 2020-2030.
The 3 generations of Smart Cities he mentioned were:
- 1.0 Tech-driven
- 2.0 Technology-Enabled, City-led
- 3.0 Citizen Co-creation
He came to the conclusion, from his experience with hundreds of mobility experts, that diversity of smart mobility visions have emerged in recent years, they have been continuously growing, diverging and converging, and will continue to do so until 2030.
The first generation of Mobility is 1.0 Tech-driven, car-centric
These days, tech dominates the conversation when it comes to solving mobility challenges. With a lot of excitement around autonomous vehicles, connected cars, and electric vehicles. This is a predominant topic in crowded cities with weak public transit infrastructures. Some of which don’t count on much support for improving their transportation system models. Mobility 1.0 is also deeply funded by mobility startups and companies like AmeriDrive which are tech-driven.
Generation Mobility 2.0 Technology-enabled, city-led
Mobility 2.0 also embraces emerging mobility technologies, but aside from that, it is marked by the leadership from cities geared towards shaping the mobility ecosystem. Here you can observe cities asserting more control over what type of mobility services currently operate and where their vehicles are allowed to circulate and be parked. The goal of this is to move a bit away from car-centricity, regardless of whether the vehicles are electric or autonomous, they’re leaning towards shared mobility models.
Generation Mobility 3.0 Human & Planet Centric
In this generation of Mobility, instead of focusing on vehicle technology, the driving factor is improving quality of life, providing inclusive access to a range of mobility services, and as Scott Shepard wrote, embracing a hub and spoke model of mobility. In Mobility 3.0, the assumption is that cities must focus on people’s movement in more sustainable and healthy ways, reducing congestion, air contamination, and climate change. Cities destined to become tomorrow’s mobility leaders are forward-thinking and user-centric. One goal of Mobility 3.0 is to support the modal shift from personal vehicles to shared mobility services.
Mobility as a Service has emerged as a transformational tool to make it more convenient to use a range of services in a seamless way in cities and regions rather than to drive your own car to go from A to B. But keep in mind, as Boyd Cohen wrote, it is not necessarily true that the three models he proposes are mutually exclusive. Some actions and services from one generation may evolve and end up being a part of another thus providing further support as a human-centric and planet centric, globally roaming MaaS ecosystem. Naturally, Mobility 3.0 is going to require more investment in infrastructure and bold leadership from the city and transit authorities to embrace innovation and open MaaS platforms.
